In the mail this week I received a surprise copy of Rocío Cerón’s Dark Matter translated by our Brother Dallin! Congrats to Dallin, it’s very good! Rocío Cerón’s Wikipedia page in Spanish gives a much better idea of how well-regarded she is.
Brother Spencer is back at Big Bar for Sunday, Mother’s Day. Favorite Mother’s Day dance tracks? We all know mine1!!
Our friend Yu Su’s second album, Foundry came out last Friday. The important reviews: Conor Thomas at Bkat calls it “an effortless sense of atmosphere,” meanwhile Brother Andrew over at Pitchfork: “Foundry luxuriates in empty space,” and most importantly over at Köpenicker Str. 70, “Delightfuly dubbed out Ambient / Chillout / House album.” Congratulations to Yu Su and M. Kent.
Greg wrote briefly on SoiL Thornton’s show at Swiss Institute and the David Hammons catalogue from the 2019 LA Hauser show.

60 Minutes had a nice segment with Chanel’s Olivier Polge hanging around their fields and factories in Grasse, France. It’s important to remember that Chanel really has partnerships with huge flower farmers! My friend Hanna2 once wrote to me something that has always stuck with me: that one of her pet peeves (and mine) was, “the idea that a fragrance produced by a small niche company will always surpass its big conglomerate counterpart both in creative and qualitative terms. Even just the proposition that any of these small-time players would have access to better raw materials than the perfumers at companies like Guerlain or Chanel (with their own private fields in Grasse) is just preposterous.”
Some book news: McNally Editions is reissuing Eric Rohmer’s only novel, Élisabeth in June.

The Met Gala took place last night. I was out for most of the evening, and everyone I spoke to who watched it seemed rather bored? I’m sure by the time you read this, the credits on the Vogue site will be updated. While it’s really easy to talk about the bad looks (lol Katy Perry), I think there are some nice looks! I’ll have more thoughts a week from now. It was kind of neat to receive an email from Almine Rech with Kim Kardashian in photos by Nadia Lee Cohen (her books here at IDEA) the moment Kim walked down the red carpet3.
